This is a page for requesting work to be done by a bot. This is an appropriate place to simply put ideas for bots. However be aware of various tools available to all users which can be used to accomplish the work without the need for a bot:
  1. Gadget Cat-a-lot can be used for most category adding, removing and moving
  2. VisualFileChange tool can be used for mass-changes of one author's uploaded files, or files in a category, creating a mass-deletion-request, let you insert tags to the file-description-pages (even copy from exif/meta-data). You can also perform find and replace operations with or without JavaScript regular expressions (regexp). A common use case is: "I've changed my username". It's a web-tool and can be launched directly.
  3. AutoWikiBrowser can be used for large number of supervised and automatic edits
  4. Commons:Batch uploading page can be used to request mass image uploads

Lampasas Daily Leader[edit]

There are about 16k pages of the Lampasas Daily Leader in Category:Media contributed by Lampasas Public Library that need categories. Could a bot add Category:Lampasas Daily Leader or better yet, volume and year categories with perhaps the individual date and month in Texas categories? Distribution of media files by years[edit]

Hello. I have a request for you to use a bot to distribute some of the photos in the Wikimedia Commons categories into child categories by year:

These are source categories usually added by a template. These shouldn't be split up by year. The subcategories should be deleted. Multichill (talk) 20:45, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill: If a flat list is important, then I propose to put file into both categories - into flat list category and into a category by year. For example, a file will have two categories Category:Mos.ru, 2022 and Category:Mos.ru (flat list). Source code of template will be:

[[Category:Mos.ru (flat list)|{{PAGENAME}}]]
{{#if: {{{year|}}}|[[Category:Mos.ru, {{{year|}}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}

This is not the venue to try to change a longer standing practice of not mixing topic categories/source categories and to not use templates to add topic categories. Because that actually makes Commons harder to navigate.
If the year is relevant, the file should be in a relevant category like in your example Category:June 2022 in Moscow.
This is not the right venue to discus the changing of such a long standing concept. Go to a broader venue like Commons:Village pump if you think it should be changed. I doubt it, but you'll never know.
Might be more useful to invest your time in structured data on Commons instead of this. Multichill (talk) 16:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot to replace Faebot's potential copyvio finder...[edit]

There needs to be an effort made to replace the checks Faebot was undertaking, in the specfic:

  • checking inside the text of a PDF/DJU for a Copyright symbol, ro Copyright messaae.
  • Flagging up licensing inconsistencies such as UK (London, Glasgow) etc published works with a PD-US-Gov license.

Based on the existing work the bot had done, I've already found 3 potential copyvios that may have otherwise not been detected.
