Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In Soviet Russia is not Humor in Russia[edit]

[1] - it's not actually Humor in Russia, it's Humor about Russia, but you won't hear those jokes inside the country. It would arguably be insulting, except that Russia isn't Soviet any more; but they still don't make these specific jokes. --GRuban (talk) 04:10, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GRuban@ Yeah, Category:In Soviet Russia covers something resembling an ethnic joke, except the butt is not the nationality but the state, more or less. Political humor, perhaps? Darn if I know. I knew the redcat that it had was useless, and it seems to me almost every category ought to have at least two parental cats. I have every confidence someone, somewhere, can handle it better than I did. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:40, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

incorrect address/wrong building being used in an article[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_talk:51_W75_St_9th_Av_jeh.jpg is actually at 76th St and is incorrectly being used as the location of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Krim_siblings Danny Rathjens (talk) 23:07, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you kindly, @Danny Rathjens: you are correct and the error is all mine. Well, someone else might possibly have misled me by mistaken coordinates, but if that is so, it's still my fault for not checking. I have repaired the error in the Wikpedia article, and begun the repair here in Wikimedia Commons. I shall also check Wikidata, where another record of the information might possibly be incorrect. Thanks again; having uploaded thousands of pictures with urban locations I am grateful to anyone who can catch my errors. For that matter, it's possible I'll be able to get to that location tomorrow to shoot the correct location. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:47, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting category you added[edit]

Hello,

I noticed that you added Category:Anthropomorphic pareidolias to Category:Princess of Hope. This opened up a whole new array of categories that I did not know about and will explore further. So thank you! Best, Krok6kola (talk) 16:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Always pleased to help, @Krok6kola: ; this is the kind of thing I find when a picture that I'm recategorizing for another reason has a strange category that sends me into previously unimagined parts of our vast category tree. My way to this one was even more indirect; one of my old pictures had been categorized by another editor, whom I followed into other changes that led me here. Deep rabbit holes can be found anywhere and lead us everywhere. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:39, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hotel Penn south side rainy jeh.jpg[edit]

This image doesn't show the Hotel Pennsylvania, at 7th Avenue and 33rd st, it shows the old Hotel Taft building, today the Hotel Michelangelo, at 7th Avenue and 51st St. That's why I removed the "Category:Hotel Pennsylvania" from it. User:jamesluckard (User talk:jamesluckard) 02:20, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. Thanks, @Jamesluckard: I wasn't paying attention, misremembered my location, and let myself be misled by a not very close resemblance. Drat; I must rename, recategorize, and adjust coordinates. That's what I get for letting dumb things like this happen. Good thing someone's awake; thanks again. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:50, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question abortus a beautifil photo[edit]

Hi Jim, i Just saw a beautiful photo you made. Can I ask you a question about it? Martijndejong (talk) 12:47, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jim, are you there? Martijndejong (talk) 13:07, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, @Martijndejong: I'm a bit busy this morning, trying to knock off some items before going out to snap some pictures. Go ahead; I'll answer when there's time; probably several hours from now. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:32, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, thank you very much for taking the time to follow-up up on my question, great to hear from you! It's about the photograph you made of the red Roosevelt aerial tram over the water. Can I use it to make a wallpaper of it and put it on a wall in my office room in my house? The picture is really great, great colours and I really like the composition! I was wondering, do you have a original high resolution file for this purpose? I would be more than happy to pay you for this, since I think it is worth it! Kind regards to you in New York (New Amsterdam ;) from the Nerherlands! Martijndejong (talk) 18:17, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Roosevelt tram fr QBB jeh.jpg
Oops! After a busy day I forgot! Yes, @Martijndejong: you can use this photo for any purpose you like, good or evil or whatever. Anyone can; I gave away my rights years ago. It would be pleasant if you gave credit to "Jim.henderson via Wikipedia". No, I do not have a file of higher resolution. I did not reduce the resolution to upload this picture. What you see, is what you get. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:02, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Statue of George Washington in Newark, New Jersey[edit]

I've used two of your images of the statue in a new article, Equestrian statue of George Washington (Newark), and received a question about copyright. Would you mind if I added, or would you add, Template:Art Photo to File:Washington in Washington Pk jeh.jpg (I like this great photo in profile!) and File:Geo W Washington Park jeh.JPG to address this? A 1912 statue should not be a problem, {{PD-old-auto-expired |deathyear=1936}}. Has a wikidata entry.

Thanks, Zeete (talk) 12:26, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Zeete: I'll be delighted if you will insert the appropriate template. I neve heard of it, and ought to learn how to use it since dozens of my pictures are of old statues.Jim.henderson (talk) 14:04, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Updated the first one, check it out. Thanks, Zeete (talk) 14:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Updated the second, did you want to use PD-self rather than cc-by-sa version? Thanks, Zeete (talk) 14:36, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whatever I did upon uploading, no need to change license. Thanks. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:26, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Image Suggestions[edit]

Hi Jim! It was really cool meeting you at the last Wikimedia meetup on Sunday March, 27. I mentioned the experimental | Add an Image functionality being added to Wikipedia to suggest images for given articles. I remember now that it is only available on certain Wikipedias, and it looks like it is only on Arabic, Czech, and Bengali Wikipedias as of now. Just thought it was an interesting connection between what you've been doing for years, and something WMF is starting to dig into as well. By the way your photographs are beautiful, I'm honored to have met you, thank you for all your contributions!! NNikkhoui (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was my pleasure, NNikkhoui (WMF)@ to meet one of the people working on technical matters such as image suggestions. Naturally in reading this I skipped the part about which Wikipedias have the "suggested image" feature trial, and tried to install it in both EN and Commons. Confusion abounded, until I came back here and opened my eyes. Due to the plague discouraging my photographic day trips I have loaded myself with too many personal categorizing projects, and won't have time to look into this feature until either Summer's photographic opportunities have passed, or the trial is made available in my wikis.
You mentioned on Sunday that there was some connection to the Wikimedia Commons Android App, which I have been using frequently ever since its crashes became rare, last year. My usual procedure is to find targets by WikiShootMe, and snap and upload them by Commons App on the spot. ('Twould be pleasant if one of them had most the features of the other.) If a target is more important, for example it has an article but no picture, I also snap it with the real camera, which has better optical qualities, and eventually process and upload it from home. As for Commons App, I have noticed sometimes that it makes category suggestions that are not obviously connected with the Wikidata item that brought me there, nor to the neighborhood geocoordinates, nor even to the filename I already assigned, yet are somewhat relevant to the photo. So, perhaps that's the connection you were talking about.
In any case I hope to meet you again at the en:Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wiknic April 2022 for a more relaxed chat. Unless that turns out to be a similarly big bash, with different benefits. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:01, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
