Identity?[edit]
Hi Daderot - File:Sequoia - Stanley M. Rowe Arboretum - DSC03313.JPG remains the last entry in Category:Unidentified Sequoioideae. Do you know if it is wood from Sequoia sempervirens, or Sequoiadendron giganteum? Or can you ask the Arboretum staff if they know? It must be known which, but I've not been able to trace any info on their website or elsewhere. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:14, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi MPF! Hope you are doing well.... unfortunately I live far, far away from that arboretum so I cannot easily ask. Since I am not a botanist, I simply copy the information displayed. Alas! In this case it does not seem sufficient. I'm sorry about that. Your classification work is very admirable - you are doing a wonderful job. I'm just sorry I can't help here.... Daderot (talk)
Incorrect species photo being used for Hypolepis punctata article.[edit]
Hello. I noticed the photo being used for the Hypolepis punctata article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypolepis_punctata
The photo is of the Dwarf Elkhorn Fern (Etc.) Polypodium punctatum 'Grandiceps'. The correct scientific name for that species WAS Polypodium punctatum (L.) Sw.'Bold text' which is now a synonym of Microsorum punctatum (L.) Copel.
Hypolepis punctata (Thumb.) Mett. was formerly Polypodium punctatum Thumb... Your article is correct, but not the photo. Hypolepis punctata fronds are "ferny" like "normal" ferns. See if you can find a correct photo.
Remember, there were FOUR different Polypodium punctatum named by four different authors of four different species...
Polypodium punctatum Thunb.=Hypolepis punctata (Thunb.) Mett.
Polypodium punctatum Spruce (or Spruce ex Hook)=Stigmatopteris lechleri (Mett.) C.Chr.
Polypodium punctatum Hook.=Grammitis punctata Raddi
Podypodium punctatum (L.) Sw.=Microsorum punctatum (L.) Copel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by L.Miller (talk • contribs) 09:37, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
If you check with Plants of the World Online, go to the homepage and type in Polypodium punctatum and you will see all four. — Preceding unsigned comment added by L.Miller (talk • contribs) 10:05, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Greetings! thanks for your very helpful and informative note - it is much appreciated. I'm not a botanist and so rely upon the markers set out next to plants. If these are not correct, please feel free to revise the article or the photo to fix things. with thanks again and all best wishes, Daderot (talk)

"Hi. I am a serious collector of Slide Adders/Magic Brain calculators. I have been trying to find some (any) information about the MBC brand of adders. They are something of a unicorn : unique, rare and elusive. I found your photo of a collection of adders that included an MBC that I have never seen or heard of. I own four different styles of MBC adders : Arithma, Magic Brain, Ve-po-ad and, the fourth, a mystery style. Your picture shows a fifth mystery style. These two mystery styles are constructed like no other adder in the world. They are not knock offs but original designs. Any information you can share will be greatly appreciated.

- Hi John, I'd love to know as much about these calculators as you do! But alas, I am 100% ignorant and simply took photos. Thanks to your question, I ran across the following interesting paper - perhaps you wrote it?
https://www.sliderulemuseum.com/Papers/MagicBrainCalculator.pdf
- It might be worth writing directly to the Ridai Museum. It's part of a good engineering university, and they may well (a) have more knowledge, and/or (b) have direct personal contacts with the MBC company. Sorry I don't know more, but I do wish you all the best in your research. Daderot (talk) 20:34, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

I'm sorry that I don't know Dutch (even though some of my ancestors did) but it does look likely that the monument is to Jan Baptist de Castillion (Het spijt me dat ik geen Nederlands ken (hoewel sommige van mijn voorouders dat wel deden), maar het lijkt waarschijnlijk dat het monument voor Jan Baptist de Castillion is). Map uploads[edit]
Hi Daderot! I appreciate your recent map uploads, but I do have some suggestions:
- Be careful not to upload duplicates - unless there are substantial differences between them, we don't need multiple copies of the same map. I've deleted several of your recent uploads that were exact duplicates of existing files.
- Please give a source link, rather than just "Digital Commonwealth". That makes it easier to understand the provenance.
- For licensing, you can use {{PD-scan|PD-US-expired}}. The PD-scan note is useful to clarify that scans don't have independent copyright, and the 70-year rule is only applicable when the author's death year is known.
- There's no need to include source information in the filename - it makes the filename longer, which makes scanning through categories less easy.
Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:38, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Pi..., Thank you for your note. Actually if memory serves me correctly (and it sometimes doesn't), each image that you deleted was MUCH HIGHER resolution than the existing image, say 30 MB instead of 3 MB. This is useful to those of us who sometimes use portions of maps, which can be blurry and indistinct on lower-resolution images. I won't go back and upload them again but do regret their loss. with best wishes for the holiday, Daderot (talk)
- Don't worry, I too enjoy the tiny details :) The few that I deleted were exactly the same pixel dimensions and thus from the same original scan; the larger filesize was due to using a higher JPG quality setting (probably 100 versus 95) when converting from that scan. For old maps, I don't find that difference to be perceptible, and the larger filesize takes longer to load / can freeze tabs. If you do find a quality difference, the ideal thing to do would be to upload the TIFF version (they're available on the BPL site for the ones you've been uploading) under the same filename with the different extension - that gives us the lossless original plus the quick-loading JPG. Pierre Rodier locomotive photo[edit]
I have done a lot of research on this engine. Thank you so much for posting it.
However the correct title should be:
Miniature locomotive which was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in the Crystal Palace, London, and won a medal at the 1855 exhibition of the Michigan State Agricultural Society, made by Pierre Rodier, Saint-Hyacinthe, 1848-1850, iron, brass - Château Ramezay - Montreal, Canada - DSC07567.jpg
Pierre Rodier was living in Detroit in 1855 and that is why it was exhibited there. Hope you don't mind me suggesting this.
- Greetings! Thank you so much for your helpful advice. As for me, I know very little - I just copied the text from the exhibit in Château Ramezay. Here's what I suggest - since I do not have the permission to change filenames myself, you can simply add a "rename" request to the file, giving the name that you think is best. Then an administrator will change the name. Thank you again! and hope this helps - Daderot (talk)
Location correction for Monodechenella macrocephala photo[edit]
The file name for your photo of Monodechenella macrocephala for says that the fossil was collected in "Livingstone Country, NY." That's almost certainly a typo. It should probably say "Livingston County, NY."
- Yes, I think you are 100% right. thank you! I cannot rename the file myself (as I don't have the permission) - do you know how to ask for a file to be renamed? If so, then some administrator will do it. with thanks and all best wishes - Daderot (talk)
