RfC: Redirect target[edit]

What should be the target of this redirect?

― Tartan357 Talk 05:29, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

  • Because of how it is recognized internationally and in the United Nations, and even, to an extent, inside many offices in Kabul, Afghanistan itself (e.g. the Afghanistan Cricket Board, which uses the tricolor flag as the primary country flag), I prefer to redirect it to File:Flag of Afghanistan (2013–2021).svg. Khestwol (talk) 08:44, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reflecting the situation in the country, File:Flag of the Taliban.svg. WittyWidi (talk) 17:44, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • File:Flag of the Taliban.svg as many Wikipedias, including the English Wikipedia, have moved on. ― Tartan357 Talk 08:05, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fyi, if no man opposes, then I will also do such a replace on some copyright tags about Afghanistan, e.g. {{PD-Afghanistan}}. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:57, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Something difficult to decide, @廣九直通車: provided an against reason by special:diff/582397194. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:03, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I select File:Flag of the Taliban.svg, as reflect to the current government entity. changed my opinion, see below --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:18, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I select File:Flag of the Taliban.svg, to reflect the government entity as well. Noorullah21 (talk) 15:26, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I also select File:Flag of the Taliban.svg, File:Flag of Afghanistan (2013–2021).svg because that's the only thing it truly is. It's as much of the Flag of Afghanistan as the Swastika is the Flag of Germany, I;d also like to point out that the legitimate tricolor flag has been the official flag of Afghanistan even before the communists took over, let alone the Taliban. ----DanTD (talk) 21:08, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DanTD This is not a discussion about what the name of that file should be. It is a discussion about what the target of the redirect File:Flag of Afghanistan.svg should be. ― Tartan357 Talk 03:32, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tartan357, Need I remind you that the Taliban was in Pakistan before it was in Afghanistan? If they were to take over Pakistan in its entirety as well, I don't think we should change the Flag of Pakistan to the Flag of the Taliban either. ----DanTD (talk) 04:26, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If they take over Pakistan in its entirety and change the flag, then yes, we should acknowledge that instead of trying to perpetuate some kind of alternate reality/safe space. The fact is the flag is in use by the current government. It's what you will see flying from government buildings across the country. You have not presented a credible concern, only silly analogies and hypotheticals which aren't even correct (the swastika was featured on the flag of Germany for 10 years, see Nazi Germany). That you find it offensive is irrelevant. For most practical purposes, the Taliban flag is the flag of Afghanistan. This redirect should point there as a matter of convenience for use on other projects, such as Wikipedia, which is mainly using the new flag. A redirect is not a political statement. ― Tartan357 Talk 06:15, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I select File:Flag of Afghanistan (2013–2021).svg to reflect the country. For the government entity, we should create a redirect under the lines of "Government flag of Afghanistan" to Flag of the Taliban.svg. --Soumya-8974 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:11, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Soumya-8974 The problem is that currently Taliban government also applied a credential for participating UN works, anyway, Taliban has an agency in Qatar. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:35, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But the Talibani Afghanistan is still represented by the 2013–2021 flag of Afghanistan. Compare the situation with Northern Ireland, which is represented by Ulster Banner.svg despite the flag has no official status since the 1970s. Soumya-8974 (he) (talkcontribs) 06:47, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Soumya-8974 But the Talibani Afghanistan is still represented by the 2013–2021 flag of Afghanistan.[citation needed] Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:56, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Afghanistan Cricket Team, Afghanistan in UN conferences etc. from August 2021. Soumya-8974 (he) (talkcontribs) 10:56, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
From an AFP report on the flag raising in Kabul this week: "[Abdul Salam Hanafi]: 'It is not the flag of the Taliban or the mullahs, it is the flag of the whole nation that has made sacrifices. This flag belongs to the whole of Afghanistan.' The Afghan national flag had been a black, red and green vertical tricolour with the national emblem overlaid in white, but the Taliban have ordered all government departments to display the white standard instead." It's pretty clear what the "Talibani Afghanistan" is represented by. If we were to keep the tricolour, we really would be doing so based solely on international recognition, rather than anything currently affiliated with the country. ― Tartan357 Talk 01:27, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, a local media says that Taliban Government's representative is now allowed to participate an UNGA conference, UNDER THEIR FLAG, so you can't say "Afghanistan in UN conferences" as it really will also be replaced. And you even can't say only the "(2013-2021) one to reflect the country" since it's nowadays only used by a rebel group in Panjshir. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:44, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Soumya-8974: Do you think that what I said wrong? Or is that local media a "pro-Taliban propaganda website"? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:51, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, and I have changed my opinion to use the Taliban flag for Afghanistan since 2021 for internal affairs, and the tricolour should be used for external affairs. Soumya-8974 (he) (talkcontribs) 13:32, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Based on some external wikis' responses, I would prefer not to redirect to anyone above, but rewrite as a {{Dab}} page, this will give people enough NPOV ways to select which flag they want to use for specific areas. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:36, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That may be the only way to get a consensus, so I'm open to it. ― Tartan357 Talk 08:51, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
