Text from back of card:
NI-O-MON OR THE GATE OF THE NI-O, AT NIKKO
"Ni-o" means the two Deva Kings, Indra and Brahma, who keep guard at the outer gates of temples to scare away demons. The figures of the Ni-o are of gigantic size and terrific appearance, and are often bespattered with little pellets of paper aimed at them by devotees who think thus to secure the accomplishment of some desire on which they have set their heart.
Each large Buddhist temple shows generally the following features: 1, the Sammon, or entrance gate to the temple grounds; 2, the Ema-do, or building for the presents given in fulfilment of vows; 3, the Shoro, or belfry; 4, the Hondo, or main temple; 5, the Soshi-do, or founder's hall, devoted to the founder of the sect to which the temple belongs; 6, the Tahoto, or reliquary, containing some portion of the patron-saint's body; 7, the Hojo, or priests' apartments; 8, the Kyaku-den, or reception hall; 9, the Hozo, or treasure house; 10, the Dai-dokoro, or kitchen; 11, the Chozu-bachi, or cistern for washing the hands before worship; 12, the pagoda; and 13, the Isi-doro, or stone lanterns presented as offerings.
